Psalm 85 Revive Us Again
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You forgave the iniquity of your people; (2) They remembered His forgiveness.
you covered all their sin. Selah
3 You withdrew all your wrath; (3) They remembered His great mercy.
you turned from your hot anger.
4 Restore us again, O God of our salvation, (4) They requested new salvation.
and put away your indignation toward us!
5 Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
6 Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
7 Show us your steadfast love, O Yahweh, (5) They relied on His lovingkindness.
and grant us your salvation.
8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, (6) They determined to listen for God to speak,
for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
but let them not turn back to folly. (7) and to do His will.
9 Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; (8) Trusted in God for a blessed future.
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, Yahweh will give what is good,
and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him
and make his footsteps a way.
Perhaps these are the things that need to populate our prayers?
We need to remember,
we need to call to mind the great faithfulness of God
and saturate it through and through with the memory of God’s forgiveness for us in Christ.
And we need to remember the superscription, “To the Choirmaster”. This psalm was meant for the people of God assembled to worship. Revival is a corporate experience. It happens in community. It happens when we pursue God together. “Don’t forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the habit of some” (Hebrews 10:24-25). Let’s be a people on a mission to pursue God with all our heart, together.
