God is greater than our hearts. Is this not a great comfort? Our hearts are deceitful things. Jeremiah said it well,
“The heart is more deceitful than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it?”(Jer. 17:9)
Our hearts affirm us and condemn us.
Our hearts rule us and destroy us with passions.
Our hearts can thrill us and exalt us.
And they can break with the sorrows and subtractions of life. So yesterday when I was reading the third chapter of the apostle John’s first letter and read verses 18-20 it was a thrill to my soul and a buttress to my sometimes feeble heart.
“Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue,
but in deed and truth.
We shall know by this that we are of the truth,
and shall assure our heart before Him,
in whatever our heart concerns us;
for God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.”1 John 3:18-20
If I could summarize John’s counsel with a few imperative phrases:
- Live with integrity.
- Live with passion.
- Remember, when you fail, (and you will), God is greater than your heart.
- Revel in that knowledge.
Oh how great to know that God is greater than our fickle, feeble and exasperating hearts.
Once again, Marty, your unique gift for condensing truth to its meatiest has provided a valuable service to your brothers. Your summary of 1 John 3:18-20 will, DV, provide many years of service.
