A New Prayer from a Dead Saint

Howard Hendricks Changed My Life: Now He Is with Jesus — SBC VoicesHoward Hendricks was a great leader and discipler of men. Not very tall but with a personality that dominated a room, he was unforgettable. Unfortunately, he is mostly forgotten today, except by everyone whoever met him or heard him, he was a man useful to God. Though small in stature, “Howie”, was both a scintillating speaker and spell-binding as a classroom teacher.

Some time back, a friend posted an old message by the good doctor on facebook (thanks Henry Oursler).  Dr. Hendricks or “Prof” as most people knew him, lives with Jesus now and his voice and cadence always remind me of my Dad. Not surprising, both he and my Dad were born in Philadelphia. At one point in his message he says to his audience,

“I pray everyday for people like you, that God will give you such a passion for Jesus Christ, that anybody that gets even close to you, will never be the same again.”

This is my prayer for all who visit here.

“Oh that our great God and Savior will give you such a passion for Jesus Christ, that anybody that gets even close to you, will never be the same again. Oh God make it so. Make it so on my life too.”

  1. Years ago I was on a Christian Bible study ministry board and one of our advisors was Dr Lois LeBar, a retired Wheaton prof. Dr. LeBar wrote the book Education That is Christian, and taught at Wheaton for over 30 years. She taught Dr Hendricks how to teach Bible when he was an undergrad there. Her methods were legendary. She was a humble educator with a very strong personality. This woman had a key role in Dr Hendricks development. He was a favorite prof for many at Cru’s Institute of Biblical Studies. His one-liners are unforgettable. I bless the memories of Lois and Howie, kingdom builders for the glory of God.
