“Make My Life a Prayer to You”

It is hard to find other artists that cover any of Keith Green’s songs. He is hard to copy. His songs are deeply personal and confessional. They are pitched for his voice and style. But I think the biggest reason he is not covered is because it takes a lot of guts to sing with such a raw intensity and honesty. Every song is like looking over Augustine’s shoulder while he writes his Confessions. His songs are almost embarrassingly honest. But that is what makes them so approximate to our own need. We need his brutal honesty about our own sin and waywardness if we are to live passionately for and like Christ. And that’s what the world needs too. The world needs those who claim His name to live with an unbridaled passion. And that is why we all would do well to sing Keith’s song, Make My Life a Prayer to You. This particular song was actually written by his wife, Melody. They were on the same page.

So here, the second song lyrics from Keith Green’s 42 year old album, NO COMPROMISE. May it be our prayer.

Make My Life a Prayer to You

Make my life a prayer to You
I wanna do what You want me to
No empty words and no white lies
No token prayers no compromise

I wanna shine the light You gave
Thru Your Son You sent to save us
From ourselves and our despair
It comforts me to know You’re really there

Well, I wanna thank You now
For being patient with me
Oh, it’s so hard to see
When my eyes are on me
I guess I’ll have to trust
And just believe what You say
Oh, you’re coming again
Coming to take me away

I wanna die and let You give
Your life to me so I might live
And share the hope You gave to me
The love that set me free

I wanna tell the world out there
You’re not some fable or fairy tale
That I’ve made up inside my head
You’re God the Son and You’ve risen from the dead

Well, I wanna thank You now
For being patient with me
Oh, it’s so hard to see
When my eyes are on me
I guess I’ll have to trust
And just believe what You say
Oh, you’re coming again
Coming to take me away
I wanna die and let You give
Your life to me so I might live
And share the hope You gave to me
I wanna share the love that setted me free

The couple in the video below covers the song well. I wish her microphone was closer and that the dulcimer was not quite so loud, but their harmonies are wonderful. And they capture Keith’s heart better than most. “For the revival that will come, Make this our prayer Lord.”
