Today a friend (thank you Robert) quoted from a Keith Green album (No Compromise), released in 1978, just four years before Keith died in a plane crash at the age of 28. It is an album with legs. Now 42 years old, with songs that are even older, it still holds up. It still seems fresh and relevant and most of all, it has lost none of its passion.
Keith was convinced in his time that the churches of America were dangerously compromised with the world. He was convinced that the church in America was “asleep in the light,” was asleep at the switch, so to speak, and needed to turn to God with a desperate honesty that tore all the white-wash off our souls bowed before a holy God. We need the like of him today.
So in the interest of extending his legacy and working to cure the ills of my own soul and pehaps as an aid for others, I am going to offer his lyrics and youtube video’s of Keith’s entire album over the next eleven days. May God be pleased to use these posts to “Soften Your Heart.” There’s not much to the chorus but there is wisdom and passion and challenge and honesty in each successive verse.
We need more of Keith Green’s blunt, simple, desperate honesty in our time. “Make it so Lord. Start with me.”
Soften Your Heart
[Verse 1]
So many times I’ve tried to tell you
But I don’t think you’ve been listening
There’s nothing I wanna try and sell you ’cause His love is free
You’re so proud of saying you’re a seeker
But why are you searching in the dark
You won’t find a thing until you soften your heart
[Chorus 1]
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-l
[Verse 2]
The message is oh so very simple
You gotta be like a child to see
‘Cause Jesus said “Let the little children come unto Me”
You try to make things too complicated
But you really don’t have to be so smart, no
You won’t learn a thing until you soften your heart
[Chorus 1]
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
[Bridge]
Well if just this once I could show you your empty life
I know you would follow him right now
Well I know it sounds
Just too good to be true
But if He Lives in you
[Chorus 2]
You’ll never die, You’ll never die
You’ll live forever
You’ll never die, You’ll never die
Take care of forever now
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
[Verse 3]
You tell everyone to keep on smiling
Your outlook on life is so positive
But deep down inside you’re searching for a reason to live
Like everyone else you’re scared of dying
But the power of death has been blown apart
And you’ll live forever
If you soften your heart
[Chorus 2]
La-la-la-la-la-la
You’ll never die, You’ll never die
You’ll live forever
You’ll never die, You’ll never die
Take care of forever now
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
You’ll never die, You’ll never die
You’ll live forever
You’ll never die, You’ll never die
The whole album is powerful and thought provoking. I have played “My eyes are dry” using it as a prayer of repentance. I loved Keith, he was all in, and his music was important in my early Christian life.
