The Consequences of a Lazy Spirituality

Sunday Afternoon Musings

David Wilkerson
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“The home that has had no God, no church, no spiritual teaching, no Bible, and no hunger for God is headed straight for disaster. … teen-agers raised in such home are going to turn on their parents with venom, hatred, and rebellion.”

As I think over some of the news reports from around the country over the last year or two, as I look at what parents have been telling me as they come for counseling, as I dialogue with friends and neighbors and hear their stories, I can’t help but think about these words from David Wilkerson from 1974.

Then this afternoon I saw the report of two high school students who viciously attacked a referee from behind in a the closing seconds of a football game! We are living in an increasingly lawless culture that has ZERO respect for authority. Here’s what the Bible says:

Godlessness in the Last Days

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
.                                                                            (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

You may not agree with all of Pastor Wilkerson’s theology (I don’t), but within his chest beat a heart that was passionate for Christ and His kingdom and a voice that still rings true today. Maybe more than in 1974.
