Friday Musings
Perhaps the perfect word for our media-saturated, insta-everything expression age in which we live.
“Often we combat our evil thoughts most effectively if we absolutely refuse to allow them to be expressed in words. It is certain that the spirit of self-justification can be over come only by the Spirit of grace; nevertheless, isolated thoughts of judgment can be curbed and smothered by never allowing them to be uttered, …”
—Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together,
(Harper Collins, 1954), 91f.

I’ve been recently convicted of my tendency to complain and speak negative messages. It leads to cynicism and a gloomy outlook on life. There is something about speaking a thought that gives it power. So, with that in mind, what about expressing truth in words to replace the evil thoughts? Speaking words of life to combat the defeating, despairing, corrupted, hopeless, selfish thoughts my flesh brings forth is a way to give power to the truth in my life, giving the Holy Spirit permission to continue His work of transformation as I turn away from the darkness and toward His light. It’s like preaching the Gospel to myself.

Amen. Preaching the gospel to ourselves should be a daily (hourly?) exercise.
