Obedience is Only Learned One Way – Bonhoeffer

Sunday Afternoon Musings

Bonhoeffer Cost of Discipleship 1“You can only learn what obedience is by obeying. It’s no use asking questions; for it is only through obedience that you come to learn the truth.”

—Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship, 86.

Bonhoeffer wrote these words in 1936 during the run up to the Second World War. Just as profound today as they were then.

“Lord, teach my heart to obey. Make obedience to you and your will my delight and joy. Make the choices I make for you become a compelling reason for others to place all their hope in you. To the praise of the glorious grace of Christ, I ask it. Amen.”
