Where Does Discipleship Lead Us?

“And if we answer the call to discipleship, where will it lead us? What decisions and partings will it demand? To answer this question we shall have to go to him, for only he knows the answer. Only Jesus Christ, who bids us to follow him, knows the journey’s end. But we do know that it will be a road of boundless mercy. Discipleship means joy.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship, 38.

Yes, discipleship means joy. Joy that is not extinguished by the sometimes brutal sorrows we endure this side of the journey’s end. Joy that eventually extinguishes all sorrows. This is our faith. This is our hope. This is what we proclaim to the world for the honor of our God and the joy of the nations.
