Searching for Treasure Like a Pearl Merchant

Update: (September 26, 2019) This is post is almost 10 years old but as I read and remembered the day that I wrote it I was reminded that this is the crying need of my heart every day of my life. I hope it will be encouragement to you value what is ultimately valuable.

Thursday is for Prayer

Old Man 2“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”  (Matthew 13:45-46)

I’m sitting in a small library in a county seat of northern West Virginia. Across from me at my table, sits a man hunting, furiously hunting through the pages of a book. First one direction and then another, the pages fly by, a momentary stop and an intense gaze at a line or two. Then the search is on again for something not yet found. His fingers are fidgeting, thumbing pages, as he stares for a second or two at a page and then, he is off on the search.

This has been going on for at least 30 minutes. I have no idea how long ago the search began. He never looks up. Eye contact is impossible. The intensity of his search is unyielding. Now it’s over. Another book is found, and the same search pattern begins. He is older, probably in his 60’s, disheveled and when he walks, it is with a shuffling gait. His name is Danny. (I overheard someone address him when he got up for his second book). I suspect he has some type of mental instability. But the search, the intensity of the search, inspires.

I want to search for the treasure of Christ with his intensity.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”  (Matthew 13:45-46)

The Pearl, Christ, has that effect on you. When you have found the pearl of great value, when the God of the universe has become the treasure of your heart, the activities of your day center around treasuring him, and proclaiming the excellence of him.

So, if you read this in the next hour or two (it is 12:15 PM EST), pray that I might have the opportunity to talk to Danny, who God used to set my heart reflecting today and to encourage him with the message of Christ. And pray for me and all those who follow Christ, that our hearts would burn to search for the Living God with fervor and joy.

Pray especially for church planters, wrapped up in all the hard work of planting a church, that they would not lose sight of Him for whom they labor. He is the Pearl, not the church that they plant.
