John Geiger has served as the headmaster at Eastwood Christian School in Montgomery, Alabama. John is both a former seminary classmate and also a former student of mine and now he is dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease. I remember John as a young man with an easy smile, a sensitive heart and an active, thoughtful mind. He was a musician and guileless follower of Jesus. Now, Lou Gehrig’s disease is rapidly destroying every muscle in his body, stealing his ability to talk and choking him to death. 

But his heart still sings the praises of God. 
His heart still rejoices in the truth of the gospel and the promise of the resurrection.

Last week, he gave what might be one of his last messages in a Baptist church in Alabama and I have attached the sound file. It is powerful in its own right, made all the more poignant by the gravel in his voice as the disease restricts his vocal chords and death looms in the near horizon. 

My own church is celebrating the home going of Thelma Hubbard this Saturday. Both Thelma who God gave 98 years, and John who won’t reach 60 sing the same song.

Jesus is worthy.

Finally, would you pray for John, his wife, Dawn, and their children as they say goodbye for now as they hope in the resurrection to come? Pray too for Kent as he says his final goodbyes to Thelma this Saturday.
