Thoughts on Worship

“For worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose—and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable.”

—William Temple,
Readings in St. John’s Gospel, 67

Let us then, pray that submission would rule our hearts, that our consciences would be quickened by His holiness and that the truth of His word would nourish our minds that the whole of our imaginations would be intoxicated with His beauty, and that His love would so dominate our hearts that we would be found useful for His purposes in the world, and erupt in worship of the One who lived and died and rose and who promised to return for us. Worship, yes, let us worship Him.
