Our Souls Leak

Reading with the Pastor
Luke 6  and  Psalm 81

Leaks 2

a brief offering for “The Poetry Project”*

Read Psalm 81

Sing for joy to God our strength;
……  Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.   (vs. 1)

. . . Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.  (vs. 10b)

Our Souls Leak

My soul leaks Lord, so
not only my mouth

      but my heart
……    my mind
….      my spirit,
let all of me be open to You.
Let me not be like Israel
….      who did not listen to You
….      who did not obey You.

I am just as stubborn as they,

….      just as rebellious,
….      just as arrogant, thankless and forgetful.
My soul leaks.
My memory fails.
My laziness languishes on beds of ease
….      and convenience.

Don’t let me be a pretender.

Feed me with Yourself.
Teach my soul that You alone
….      will satisfy my longing.

Make my soul sing for joy in You,
….      My Strength and Redeemer
and because my soul leaks,
fill me with new joys everyday.

* Historical Note:  In December of 2009 or thereabouts, my son, Marty Schoenleber III (aka Marty S. Dalton), put a video up on Youtube.com. It inspired me to keep working on a project I thought of a couple of years ago. The idea is to write a poem of personal reflection for each Psalm in the Psalter. You can find some of those offerings under the ABOUT tab under the title, THE POETRY PROJECT. Some of the poems are preceded by a brief commentary.

Disclaimer: Don’t think of any as high art. Think of these offerings as one poor man’s desire to draw nearer to Christ. New entries will generally appear on Sunday afternoons.  One more thing: It is always best to read the psalm or the verses being commented on first.
