All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without benefit of experience.
—Henry Miller, writer
Henry Miller is a writer and as far as I know, no great authority in things spiritual, but I think there is some truth hiding in his words here. All growth is an advance into the unknown, a step in the direction that is away from our past experience. I think that part is right.
The point I want to nuance a bit is the idea of growth as a “leap in the dark.”
Never. Not with our God. He is light, in him there is no shifting shadow.
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. (James 1:17)
Every movement toward Him is a movement, a leap, into light. He is always trustworthy, always ready to catch us and grow us to into what is best for his glory and for our own joy.
