Weekend Mourning After Connecticut Horror

Weekend Mourning After Connecticut Horror

China knife attack victim in 2012Yesterday in China, a man stabbed 22 children in an Elementary School.

(China was hit by a spate of knife and cleaver attacks that targeted school children in 2010.) Yesterday was a new and horrific repeat of history.

Connecticut Shooting Grief

Today, a young man, 20, killed at least 27 people in an Elementary School in Connecticut, most of them childrenLast count was 6 adults including his mother, 20 children, some as young as 5 and himself.

On December 11, a gunman opened fire in and Oregon Mall seeking to inflict bodily injury and death on strangers and to create fear and anxiety in all. Before that, early last year, dwarfing all these others, a deranged young man murdered  91 people, mostly teens on a Norwegian Island while posing as a policeman.

Before these horrors, there was Columbine High School in Colorado and we all have heard and read the reports in our cities of young people murdering one another at record clips in 2012. We remember the shootings at a Virginia University and an Amish School house just a few years ago and more recently, in a theater in Aurora. Ours is a world that desperately needs the Prince of Peace.

  • Pray for the first responders.
  • Pray for the parents whose arms are empty today.
  • Pray for our President whose heart is heavy like everyone else and yet he still has to lead our nation through this time.
  • Pray for Pastors and Christians around the country but especially in Newtown Connecticut.
  • Pray that they would be wise and that they would not be like Job’s friends offering half-truths and certainty when they ought to be quiet.

AndpPray for our world in which every 24 hour period looks more and more like 2 Timothy 4. I have emphasized with bold type those phrases that seem most appropriate to this latest evidence of corruption at the center of our world culture:

2 Timothy 3:1-5 (ESV)
1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

Pray for our world. We are Lot in the midst of Gomorrah.
