Want to Know How Important Preaching Was to Jesus?

Tuesday is for Preaching

Mark 1:14, 38-39 (ESV)
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,

38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”  39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Want to know how important preaching was to Jesus? Do some research on how many towns there were in the Galilean region in the first century large enough to have a synagogue. (With a good study Bible and the internet, this should be a snap). Then go and calculate how many months it would take to preach in two towns a day preaching six days a week. I could tell you my answer, but the process, the hunt is part of the aha moment.

  • In your ministry, how important is announcing the news that the Kingdom of God has come near and the appropriate response is to repent and believe in the gospel?
  • How is that reflected in your preaching and equipping of the saints?

  1. Guess I need some help with this one! I’m sure there are more, but I counted 15 towns on my map, and significant distances for walking between some…I did discover there were likely 480 synagogues in Jerusalem alone, and it only took ten Jewish men to start a synagogue. Please give me some direction on websites or something to continue??? Thanks!

  2. A Synagogue was typically established if a village had 10 or more Jewish males. If not most Synagogues were located within a Sabbath walk of each other so as not to violate the Sabbath regulations.

The Galilean Jewish population during Jesus’s time is estimated at between 150,000 and 300,000.

Josephus who commanded the Jewish forces of the first Jewish revolt about 30 years after Christ’s resurrection mentions there were about 240 villages scattered about the hills and valleys of the region. Calling the population 220,000 and approximately 240 villages, this would put the average population of each village at a little less than a 1000. Assuming a household of 5 (including children, servants, extended family members); this would yield an adult male population of about 200 per village.

Not sure the max size of a synagogue but if 200 then there were 240 villages and approximately 240 synagogues. Thus it would take about 20 months to preach in all. However, some towns may have had several so I guess it would take about 3 years to preach in all the synagogues in Galilee.
