אֱלֹהֵי אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם
About a year before I left New Song Church, I preached through the life of Jacob. For me, it was a wonderful time of discovery anew of the great grace of God in the lives of the patriarchs of Israel. Now, as I begin a new season of life, I am finding new inspiration in the pages of God’s inspired word.
The Hebrew phrase above is literally, “[the] God of my master Abraham.” It appears four times in the 24th chapter of Genesis (24:12, 27, 42, 48). Abraham had sent his oldest servant to find a wife for his son Isaac from among his countryman (24:2). We never learn the faithful servant’s name. We see the miraculous intervention of God in fulfilling his prayer by leading him to Rebecca (24:15ff). And we hear him use this phrase to describe his relationship and respect for Abraham.
It seems that the most dominating thought in the mind of this nameless but faithful servant is that Abraham was a follower of God. I wonder if that is the most dominating thought that people have of us? I wonder if that is the most dominating thought that people have of me?
“Lord, I don’t know the answer to that question, but would You help me to make that the ambition of my life? To be known as a man who has You for his God–what greater ambition can I have? Make me love You more tomorrow than today and more each day after.”
May your passion for Jesus grow as you worship Him with the people of God this day.
yeah… yeah…
