Sunday Afternoon Musing
Wayne Cordeiro writes in his book, The Divine Mentor, “My best friends are in the Bible.” Today, I am rereading the book and being re-inspired by it. Think about what Wayne wrote. Ask yourself the question, . . .
How do I become best friends with people of the Bible?
Let me suggest a couple of things:
- Pick a character and read all the chapters that relate to their lives.
- Read those chapters again and again.
- Try to answer as many interrogatives as you can about their lives.
- Who, what, when, where, why, how, with whom, etc.
- Read with imagination.
- Example 1: How do you think Samuel felt when the elders of Israel came and said what they did in 1 Samuel 8:4 to him?
- Example 2: How do you think David felt when his men wanted to stone him in 1 Samuel 30:6?
- Example 3: How do you think Jeremiah felt when God told him he must preach, knowing that no one would listen (Go and find it)?
- Try to place yourself in their shoes.
- Or try to imagine yourself standing with any of these men seeking to be faithful to God.
- Consider purchasing one of the following books to help you in your journey of becoming best friends with your new Bible friend.
- Paul D. Gardner, New International Encyclopedia of Bible Characters: The Complete Who’s Who in the Bible, (Zondervan, 2001).
- Marty Schoenleber, Jr. Close Reading: Plans and Projects for Multiple Readings of Holy Scripture, (The Sojourning Press, 2025).
- Alexander Whyte, Bible Characters from the Old and New Testaments: Complete and Unabridged in One Volume (Kregal Publications Reprint, 1886, 1990).
- Bruce H Wilkinson and Larry Libby, Talk Thru Bible Personalities, (Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, 1983).
Finally, most importantly, bathe all your study in prayer.
