Sunday Afternoon Musings
Last night, I was reading 1 Thessalonians and was struck again by the fact that Paul wrote this letter to a group of baby Christians, and yet in every chapter he talks about the second coming of Christ. Apparently, for the apostle Paul, the doctrine of the Second Coming is considered prime subject matter for new-believer follow-up. It was the perfect backdrop for the book I am reading this afternoon.
The book is called Jesus is Coming by W.E. Blackstone, and was first published in 1878. The copy in my hands was printed in 1917. Here are the opening sentences of chapter 4 (IV) titled, The Three Appearances..
“The grandest fact in history is that Jesus Christ, the Lord of Glory, has been in this world.
And the most important fact of the present is that He is now in Heaven making intercession for us.
And the greatest prophesied event of the future is that He is coming again. (p. 33)
Men and women, remember that. The most sure and significant event in the future is not the rise or fall of communism in the United States. It is not the transgender nonsense that is nightly pushed into our culture or the foolishness of our politicians on both the right and the left. Or whether Elon Musk will put people on Mars, or whether Taylor and Travis will last as a couple.
The most significant fact of the future is that Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead, and that at his appearing every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord.
Remember that and rejoice.
