Tom Short, a campus evangelist with Campus America, has written a short but helpful book on the topic of what is happening in too many Christian homes, or rather, in the lives of children now in their 20’s and 30’s. One of the things that is most helpful is Tom’s ability to bring clarity to the causes of their faith deconstruction. But he also boils things down at the “big picture” level as well.
“There are two reasons a person rejects the faith:
- The reason that sounds good, and
- The real reason.”
Tom Short,
Stop the Exodus, 8.
In my experience, he is spot on.
I am preparing for a trip to Africa to train pastors and I have little time to write in detail on this post, but I would like to at least list the nine “real reasons” that the book explores. The book itself is an ebook and is free to download and maybe this brief post will be enough to motivate readers to go to his website and download it for themselves.
Reason #1: They’ve chosen sexual immorality over God.
Reason #2: They won’t forgive those who have offended them.
Reason #3: They choose the wrong friends.
Reason #4: They’re educated to do so.
Reason #5: The Christianity we offer them is boring.
Reason #6: They weren’t saved to begin with.
Reason #7: They crave being a part of the IN crowd.
Reason #8: Christianity didn’t work for them.
Reason #9: They fail to become strong.
I would add one more. Reason #10: We (the church and parents) failed to train them to think critically about the cultural zeitgeist.
