Close Reading: Plans and Projects for Multiple Readings of Holy Scripture
Every writer hopes their books will find an audience, but that isn’t why writers write. We write because we can’t live without writing. We write because writing helps us learn. We write because writing helps us think. And we write hoping that someone else might join us in the process of learning and thinking. And of course, we want people to appreciate and like what we write. But until the writing is done, people can’t appreciate and value the process.
So today, with The Sojourning Press, I am announcing the launch of a new book with the brief reviews included here. The first is from my wife. The second is from the forward (written by Dr. Ted Ewing)
“This book will help build treasures where neither moth nor rust will destroy and will help you know God and his ways profoundly. It is a book you can use every month for the rest of your life. It’s a keeper.”
Stephnie Schoenleber
Bride of the Author“I couldn’t sleep. So, at 3:00 AM, I began reading my email, hoping to get bored and return to my bed. An email was there from an old friend asking me if I would be interested in writing a forward to his newest book. Attached was a PDF file of the galleys. I couldn’t stop reading.
I kept reading and reading what he described as a “tool.” And now I sit here in tears asking, “Where was this tool when I entered seminary or when I graduated? . . . How would my LIFE have been different? How would such a broad and—in specific areas—deep understanding of my Lord have transformed me?” I read through The Pentateuch lists, asking if this was doable. By the time I got to the Psalms, I was convinced it was not only attainable but needed to be done!
So many of the tools I was exposed to in seminary were task-specific: metaphorically, learning to drill holes, hammer nails, and glue flooring. (Languages, —ologies, church history, pastoral care, etc.) All good. But where was time spent learning to read the blueprints of the whole house of the Bible?! It might have been wiser, to begin with this blueprint as a tool so that we could see later why and where we would need all the special tools and skills. . . .
Follow these plans, and you will “handle the word of truth” well; the Lord you serve will be pleased, and your congregation will rejoice.”
Dr. Ted Ewing, PhD.
