Prayer, Only as Powerful as Our Lives

The book is NOT written by Tozer. It is a compendium of quote from the writings of Tozer edited with commentary by W. l. Seaver, but it is a worthy read. Seaver has culled all of these quotes from not only the published works of Tozer but also from many of Tozer’s sermons. It is a wonderful new contribution to the study of Tozer’s thought.

“All things else being equal, our prayers are only as powerful as our lives. In the long pull we pray only as well as we live. Some prayers are like a fire escape, used only in times of critical emergency—never very enjoyable, but used as a way of terrified escape from disaster. They do not represent the regular life of the one who offers them; rather they are the unusual and uncommon acts of the spiritual amateur.”

I have no desire to be a spiritual amateur, but I fear that I am. But I am not giving up. The next 14 months I am devoting to deepening my understanding and practice of prayer. This is one of the books I am going to use in the process. Join me.

  1. Hi Marty, I will join you. I feel like I’m a spiritual amateur and I want to change that. I just purchased the book and bought an extra copy for my father in law. I will be sharing your post with him as well. Thank you for making a difference in my life.
