Why is it Necessary for Disciples to Multiply Themselves?

Thursday is for Discipleship

Question: Why must every disciple be a multiplier?

Biblical Answers:

  1. Because the apostolic pattern is clear — 2 Timothy 2:2 — find and teach faithful others who will teach others also.
  2. Because the apostolic expectation is clear — Hebrews 5:12 — “by this time you ought to be teachers”
  3. Because of all the “one another” passages in the New Testament.
  4. Because the work of restoring and comforting one another in the body is directed to all the saints, not just elders/pastors — 2 Corinthians 13:11
  5. Because older men and older women are commanded to build into the lives of those who are younger — Titus 1-2
  6. [ How many more can we add from your input in the discussion? ]

Pragmatic Answers:

  1. All of us will eventually reach our “relational limits.” There either isn’t enough time in a day or emotional strength in an individual to help all that need to grow, grow into the fullness of Christ.
  2. When only a few do the work of proclamation and formation, the body of Christ is robbed of the joy of their blood-purchased priesthood.
  3. More saints involved in the work of disciple-making means more networks of relationship tapped and more people exposed to the wonders of grace and gospel and the transformation that Christ makes in a life.

Therefore:

  • Who is your Barnabas? — who is building into you?
  • Who is your Timothy? — who are you building into?
  • Where is your mission? — who are you trying to reach? / where are you trying to make an impact?

  1. Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

    OR

Make disciples of all nations as you go…

This is one of those, “nuff said” verses.

Everyone of us needs a Nathan. Without a Nathan in my life, I can get pretty cocky and convinced of my own holiness very, very quickly. I must have a friend who loves me enough to risk offending me but will call me to account when needed.

  3. Hi Pastor Marty,

I’m Ellen from the Horizon’s retreat you spoke at back in October. I took reading your blog in consideration and I’m very glad to do so. I agree with the Nathan person in our lives– probably the best thing for someone to have the courage to rebuke us to save ourselves from ourselves! I hope you’re doing well– hope to see you soon at CCUC!!

    Sincerely,
    Ellen

  4. Kind of obvious, but under the ‘what would Jesus do’ thought process, Jesus did it with 12 at the same time. We take Matt 28:19 as a command for us, but in reality those were Jesus’ final remarks to the 12 (minus one) as He wrapped up his multi year training program with them.

  5. 6) because there is no greater joy . . . 3 John 4. I learned from another, I passed it on to others, they are living it out–to pass it on again! Yes!
