Are You Praying for the President?

Wednesday is for Prayer

The Scriptures tell us that we should pray for all those who are in authority.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 (ESV)

1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Our nation and our President need our prayers. The President needs our anguished voices to be heard in the halls of heaven for his soul, for his counselors, for his decisions, for his policies. There is little evidence that anything decided in Washington these days is motivated or informed by biblical values.

But this is no time to despair. It is a time for the people of God to start being obedient to the call to pray for their leadership. But before we start to pray, maybe it would be best to start with repentance for having not prayed for the President as we should.

A man I greatly admire sent me the following video link. it is a call to prayer for the nation. Can I ask you to take some time, watch the video, repent (if like me you haven’t been praying for the President as you should), and then spend some time in prayer for the nation and the man in the Oval Office. Our God works miracles.

  1. Marty, you say that little in Washington these days is motivated or informed by biblical values. That sentence could also apply to the 8 years of Bush mismanagement. I say that the president now is doing things to help average Americans who need it. I also seem to remember something about the separation of church and state. I think we need LESS of so-called religious leaders chiming in with what they think ALL of America should be doing or not doing. Keep it separate.

    1. Ed, hey man, good to hear from you. Didn’t know you were one of the visitors to the blog. Did you poke around a bit or was this the only one you found worth commenting on?

Hope you and your wife are doing well and enjoying the good weather. I agree with you by the way on the 8 years of the Bush mismanagement of a whole host of issues, but Bush isn’t the President now. My president is Mr. Obama and as a Christian I was calling all Christians to acknowledge that and to pray for the man who has some awesome responsibilities. The President’s job is hard.

Now as for “so-called religious leaders” not speaking up on the issues of our time, I can’t agree with you. I want to be in the tradition of Martin Luther King of more recent memory, and Ambrose of Milan of more ancient memory (I have written briefly about him here: http://chosenrebel.blogspot.com/2009/12/tell-president-god-not-he-is-supreme.html).

I want to speak to issues that I think all Christians should think hard about. We haven’t talked in years, and I think you would be surprised to find that I don’t, and much of the broader evangelical church, does not fit in the neatly tied box that the media would like to put us in.

For a brief glimpse of what our ministry looks like in terms of stepping up to “help average Americans” you should read http://wp.me/pGYIn-8r. It will give you a picture, I think, of a truly compassionate conservative approach that critiques both right and left and has ultimate allegiance to Jesus rather than either political party, both of which for my money, are thoroughly corrupt.

I suspect you and I are not on the same page with regard to what the gospel of Jesus is all about. But I respect you and hope that we can have a cup of coffee over some of these things sometime when I am back east.

I wonder what ever happened to Mr. Zych? Drop in often.
