There is nothing in this post about the Supreme’s hit, Stop in the Name of Love, about a philandering husband and his wife’s pleading that he would stay home with her. But when I thought of Psalm 12, for some reason, the song title came into my head. Oh well, maybe somebody else can figure out why.
If you love Jesus, you pray. You may not do it well. You may feel impotent in your prayer at times. But if you love Jesus, you pray. And, like the early disciples, you ask Jesus to help you learn how to pray (see Luke 11:1-13). And when you do, He will teach you. After Jesus gave them the Lord’s prayer as a model, He taught them many more times and showed them by example how to pray. Even on the cross, when He prayed for His persecutors and when He quoted Psalm 22, He modeled how we could learn to pray. Use the psalms. That’s what these prayers are all about.
Prayer Stop One (AM)
Calling the Heart to Worship
Read Psalm 12
Is this not good news to awaken to this morning:
“Because the poor are plundered,
because the the needy groan,
I will arise,” says the Lord.
“I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”
Our God knows the needs of those
that our culture discards.
He goes with us as we go into the world
to fight for the needy.
Serve Him well. Serve the plundered masses well.
Your God goes with you.
cf. Psalm 12:5
Read Psalm 42 and 72
Prayer Stop Two (Early Afternoon)
Calling the Heart to Repentance
As the deer pants for waterbrooks
so pants my soul for You, O God.
And yet I am aware that my heart is not completely Yours.
I struggle everyday with selfish desires
and unkind words at inappropriate moments.
I need Your forgiveness.
But I need Your presence too.
I want to pant and thirst for You
like never before.
I want a holy passion for You
and Your will ways to have first position in my life.
I love You Lord, but I want to love You more.
Hear my prayer
Keep my soul from being cast down,
that my life would be a glory for You.
cf. Psalm 42:1-2
Read Psalm 102 and 132
Prayer Stop Three (PM before rest)
Calling the Heart to Rest (a benediction on the day)
May God give you rest.
May He who describes Himself as our refuge,
be your refuge in the night.
May He who describes Himself as our strong tower
be Your strength through the night.
May He who is the Mighty One of Jacob
comfort Your heart and bring rest
to both Your body and soul.
And may you rise in the morning
to serve Him with joy.
cf. Psalm 132
