The Stagnation or Transformation of a Community?

Weekend Reading

When you are on a mission, you know it. Even Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi knew that (see Blue’s Brothers Movie)! Some quotes from Ed Stetzer and Thom Rainer’s new book, Transformational Church: Creating a New Scorecard for Congregations.

“We are supposed to see transformation, but too often we see stagnation.” (p.2)

“We can choose the kind of change that advances the kingdom of God into our world, or we can retreat into a subculture that attempts to insulate us from the world.” (p. 3)

“God calls us to make a transformational impact on the world, not provide a carnival of frenetic activity for ourselves. But to make this impact, we must engage in His mission for his sake on His terms.” (p.3f)

“We all know what it’s like to be on a mission. When you’re on one, your focus is consuming.” (p. 5)

  1. Funny, I just preached on this yesterday out of Titus 3:8-11. (I even used the Blues Brothers’ quote!) Our mission is to bless the world, but we get distracted by foolish controversies and divisive people. We need to keep our eyes on the gospel and stay focused. I think Piper calls it a “wartime mentality.”
