Philly fans are in mourning this morning after the Eagles’ exit from the playoffs. But we are heartened by the fact that the Phillies, perennial World Series contenders in this era, are less than a month from having pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training. For sports fans, seasons have nothing to do with the calendar and everything to do with when your teams begin their seasons.
I love baseball and all of the Philly teams (Flyers, Eagles, Sixers), but I weep no tears when they lose. Sure, I am disappointed, but after all, it is only a game. While I am no Dallas Cowboy fan, one of their running backs from the 70’s by the name of Calvin Hill, made a profound observation. The Cowboys were preparing for the Super Bowl, and a reporter addressed Mr. Hill with a question: “How does it feel now that you are about to play in the ultimate game?” Calvin’s answer stunned the reporter into silence. “If it is ultimate, why does it get replayed every year?”
Great answer. Great perspective.
“If it is ultimate, why does it get replayed every year?”
There is only ONE who is ultimate.
He created the universe, selected a people, sent a Savior (Himself, in human flesh), lived a sinless life, atoned for the sins of all who would believe, and promised eternal life to all those who repented of sin and believed His words, and proved their belief by living all of life on the basis of His commands. He rose from the dead, confirming His words were true, and promised to return again to vindicate and redeem His people. We are 2000 years closer to that day. No one knows when the day is. Many think it is near. Guessing exactly when is a game you don’t want to play.
Because, in the end, the only “game” you really want to win, is the game of life, and the ONLY way to win that is with Him by your side.
Trust in Jesus today.
