Three Myths About God’s Will

  1. God is obligated to make his will known to you.
    • No, He isn’t
    • Knowing His will is tied to being willing to do his will.
    • “If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.” (John 7:17)
  2. Desires of your heart are never God’s will.
    • Not true.
    • Actually, if you are walking with God in the power of His Spirit and obedience to His commands, the opposite is true.
    • Listen to these words from Psalm 37
      • “3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
           Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
        Delight yourself in the Lord;
           And He will give you the desires of your heart.
        Commit your way to the Lord,
           Trust also in Him, and He will do it.”  (Psalm 37:3-5)
    • Best of all, if you delight in the Lord, i.e. if the Lord is your delight, He will give you Himself!
  3. God wants you to know all of His will right now.
    • No, He doesn’t
    • In fact, He has good reason not to let you know all of His will right now.
      • He wants us to trust Him moment by moment and knowing to much now might inhibit our growth in the grace of trusting Him as His word.
    • An illustration: you are driving home on a dark mountain road at night. The car’s lights illuminate the road for about 150-200 yards. Suddenly, an overwhelming fear grips you. “What will I do when I don’t know what is beyond the headlights?” And then you remember the Scripture in Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, / And a light to my path.” And that is all you need to keep driving in confidence. You don’t need light beyond the headlights; you need light for the “next step.”

Three Fantastic Truths about the Will of God and Your Life

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

  1. God’s will is Good.
  2. God’s will is Acceptable.
  3. God’s will is Perfect.

Live your life with confidence if you have given your life to Jesus. Give your life to Jesus like the apostle Paul calls us to in verse 1 and verse 2 will be yours as a gift, just like your salvation. Merry Christmas people. Delight in Him who came to die and rise for you.
