You have heard the phrase, “our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” It comes from the Declaration of Independence. It was the pledge the signers of the Declaration made to one another and the nascent nation. They knew that their signatures at the bottom of the document would cost them their fortunes, probably any honor that they had, and almost definitely, their very lives. In other words, they gambled everything they had on the rightness of their cause, the goodness of their principles, and the value of their lives. All of these were worthy of sacrifice.
If you have never read it, I recommend the book by the same name (Our Lives, Our Fortunes, and Our Sacred Honor) by Paul Harvey. It tells the backstory of what the actual cost was for each of the signers of the Declaration. It is a brief and inspiring story told in Paul Harvey’s inimitable form.
All of this line of thinking and the recent martyrdom of Charlie Kirk and the ongoing persecution and slaughter of Christians in Nigeria make my mind ask two questions.
One, “Do the exertions of my life reflect the incomparable value of Christ and the Gospel?”
and
Two, “What is the most precious thing I/we could give to Christ as a sacrifice for the Gospel?”
And my conclusion is that the most precious thing that a man or woman can give is their life. It is appropriate that only ‘precious’ things are worthy to be given to a king, but especially to the King of kings. So the two questions above are highly convicting.
“Lord Jesus, my King, I want to answer these two questions well. Help me to finish my journey well. Help me to live boldly and courageously for You. You are more valuable than a constitution or a country, and men and women have died for their country and the freedoms and native love for their place of birth. How could I give You less than them? Help me to represent You well, with compassion and humility and courage. For Your glory, I ask that You would give me more opportunity to serve You and thank You for the time I have remaining.”

Love you Marty. God bless you and your family always and forever. Amen
