A Christian, a proclaimed Christ-follower, has been caught and accused of the murders of two opponents of his political values. The media will make much of the things he is against, which correspond to many of the same values that Christians around the world and down through the ages have opposed on biblical grounds. He has undermined, by his violent and murderous heart, the peaceful proclamation of the gospel by taking matters into his own hands and failing to trust the God and said he follows. His rash, evil, and disgusting act has resulted in deaths of a husband and wife whom he was called to love by his Savior.
He failed them. He failed the body of Christ. He failed Christ Himself. And he has brought shame on the body of Christ.
Violence toward political opponents is never appropriate for private citizens.
We should grieve. We should be on our knees. We should begin to recognize that American Christianity is only thimble deep. We should be praying for God’s mercy for being such poor representatives of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. And we should be praying that God might send a revival to our nation.
