A Remarkable Story

“After two years of captivity, the unfortunate captain received terrible news: his mother was dying. Driven by desperation, he wrote a letter to Kaiser Wilhelm II begging to see his mother one last time.

Against all expectations, the Kaiser took an interest in the matter and gave him permission to go to England to say goodbye to his dying mother, but only if he swore on his honor to return. Thus, Campbell was able to see his mother again in December 1916, a few months before her death. Having completed his mission, he returned to the prison camp to keep his promise. The following year, now free of all bonds of honor, he tried to escape but was recaptured near the Dutch border and remained a prisoner until the end of the war.”

There is a little more information on the man and his life in the Wikipedia article but not much. I have no other point to make, just a remarkable story except maybe this:

The world has changed. I can’t imagine anything in this story happening anywhere in the world today. Today, there is less compassion, less honor, less integrity, less faithfulness. Perhaps that is something to reflect upon in the meanness of our own age.
