Why Are Our Eyes Dry?

Where are Our Tears Over the Nation?

God only uses broken things. I don’t know why; I just know that is how it works. All of the heroes of the faith have brokenness in their biography. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Sarah, Hannah, Samuel, Esther, David, Solomon, Paul, Peter, John, all of them, and many more, had periods and seasons of deep brokenness and disfunction, even estrangement from God .

Psalm 51:17

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

On the day I started this post, there were three shootings in various parts of the country, children dying and being terrorized by the violence of cowards—where are our tears?

Jeremiah 9:1

Oh that my head were waters
And my eyes a fountain of tears,
That I might weep day and night
For the slain of the daughter of my people!

Our nation legalizes things and behaviors that God abhors. After aborting 60 million defenseless babies, our nation continues to find new avenues to make life for children who survive the womb less safe and secure.

Psalm 119:136

My eyes shed streams of water,
Because they do not keep Your law.

Our supreme court justices have difficulty defining what is a man or a woman. Women’s real opportunities and safety in sports are in jeopardy while governors and university officials continue to push a dangerous agenda.

Isaiah 5:20

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

Our politicians (every party you can name), lie with impunity, as the nation’s trust in our election processes, our government, our courts, our police and intelligence agencies

Proverbs 29:2

When the righteous increase, the people rejoice,
but when the wicked rule, the people groan.

cf. Prov. 11: 20; 28:12, 28

As we, the people of God see these things in our nation, where are our tears? Where is our lament? Where is our desire for tears and lament? Where is the cry to our God for forgiveness and restoration? Where is mine?

“O God, forgive us. Make our hearts break over these things like Your heart surely does.  Build in us a passion for Your will to be done on earth just as it is in heaven. Bring a new seriousness to our faith in Your goodness and justice. Help us to cease from our 24 hour pursuit of entertainment and comfort. Put tears in our souls over the state of the nation. Some of us are more positive about the future after the recent election, but it is an optimism that is fragile. The nation is not turning to You. We may be turning to policy and politicians, but those are not You. Change us, O God, Don’t leave us to our own plans and devices. In the name of our risen Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, I ask it. Amen.”

For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this. Indeed, from now on you will surely have wars.”

2 Chronicles 16:9-10

“Make our heart completely Yours!”

  1. God bless you Marty.  We as a people need to open our eyes and heart to the only true God and Savior of the world God’s Son Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.  You have said that we leak.  We as humans are distracted by life and all that is in it.  It is frightening how far man will go into sin.  Me included.   But God is loyal and faithful.  Praise our Holy Almighty Father God who loves us.  Marty, I am thrilled with God and the way He has continued to shape and mold me to be more like Jesus.  The words of God come to mind.  The way to destruction is wide.  The path to righteousness is narrow.  We don’t know why that is .  Free will I guess.  Love you Marty.  Let me know when you can meet for lunch.
