Zechariah’s “Song” of Wonder

Zacharias by Michelangelo

Churches all around the country are working through the “Four Songs of Christmas” on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas this year. For many, this week’s text was Zechariah’s prophecy on the day his son, the future “John the Baptist,” was born (Luke 1:67-79).

The backstory of this prophecy is in Luke 1:5-25, 36-66. Zacharias doubted the angel’s message that he and his wife would have a son in their old age. As a result he was disciplined with muteness until the child would born. Thus started 9 months of silence and meditation on what the meaning of his son’s birth meant for the nation and the world. Now, with 9 months of meditation and the empowering of the Holy Spirit, Zacharias reveals the fruit of thinking. The birth of John the Baptist is the signal to the nation that God’s 450 years silence, like Zacharias 9 month silence is over. Zacharias’s first spoken words after his supernatural muteness, are these words in Luke 1:67-79.

The First Words After Silence

are words about salvation
                   about accomplishing redemption
                   about promise keeping
                   about prophecy fulfilled
                   about the end of fear
                   about the forgiveness of sin
about the tender mercy of God
about light breaking through through the darkness
about comfort in shadow of death
about a path to peace for our feet.

Don’t miss the opportunity to reflect on the greatness of these words. They are still true. They are still magnificent. They are still God’s message to a world in need.
