“Prayers for the Day After an Election” NOT “Prayers for the Day after This Election”. That is important. As I sit here meditating on Psalms 6, 36, 66, 96 and 126, I have no clue about which party has won their election. I don’t know if Miss Harris of Mr. Trump is the new president. I don’t know who won for in congressional or senate elections at the National or State levels. I don’t know what ballot issues have been voted up or down. What I do know is that for too many people, too much of their happiness hangs on the answers to those questions.
So these prayers are focused on bigger issues, such as our praise of God for His mercies, our need to repent of our failings and our need to rest in our trust in Him. These three things are far more important to our mental and spiritual health than we typically ascribe and far more important to our witness to the world in these anxious times.
November Prayers (6)
Calling the Heart to Worship
Read Psalm 36
Rise from your bed with the knowledge that His lovingkindness
extends to the heavens
and His faithfulness reaches the skies.(vs. 5)
And if it reaches there, it reaches to you.
Rise, remember and smile.
He, the righteous One, the loving One, the faithful One–
goes with you as you begin your day.
Trust him with confidence.
cf. Psalm 36
Read Psalm 6; 66 and Proverbs 6
Calling the Heart to Repentance
Lord, I read Proverbs 6 today and it humbled me.
It humbled me because of it urgency.
It humbled me because it is so clear about how we are to live
and yet I see myself as lazy and unproductive
compared to the urgency thrust upon me by this chapter.
I read the things that You hate (vss. 16-19),
the pride.
the lies,
the violence,
the wicked plans,
the eager rebellion of the heart,
the defamation of others and
the spreading of strife–
all of these periodically creep into my thoughts and behavior.
Thank you Jesus for Your forgiveness.
I was a sinner; I still sin; but You have made me a saint.
You have called me, all of us who You have redeemed,
to live lives worthy of Your glory and I fall so far short.
I can’t do it Lord, without Your forgiveness
and Your Spirit’s empowering.
So Lord, hear my prayer and grant Your forgiveness.
Call my heart to You and don’t let me go.
cf. Proverbs 6:1-5, 16-19
Read Psalm 96; and 126
Calling the Heart to Rest (a benediction on the day)
11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
Let the sea roar, and all it contains;
12 Let the field exult, and all that is in it.
Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy
13 Before the Lord, for He is coming,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
And the peoples in His faithfulness.
And let Your heart rest this evening with knowledge
that He is coming to judge the living and the dead,
and that you, because you are IN CHRIST, will not face His wrath.
You deserve it, but you will not face it
because Your Savior faced it for you.
Rejoice and rest peacefully this night.
cf. Psalm 96:11-13 (NASB95); and 96
