Cleaning Out Old Files: Finding Treasures

In my office are four large file cabinets, 16 drawers in all, and two more drawers in my “aircraft carrier desk” filled with files on every book of the Bible and hundreds of topics related to virtually all fields of literature and the humanities plus numerous topics in science. It is exactly the case in most pastors with a seminary education. We collect thought stuff that will help us organize and deepen our own thoughts on everything touching on the gospel of the Lord we serve.

But relevance of those files ends with me. Few others would find my collection and files very interesting, even my own children. As the sands in the top of my hourglass diminish, it is time to purge things, so that my children and wife won’t have to. So for about three weeks now, I have been looking, sifting, purging, throwing, laughing, crying, and praying through the collected works of 50 years of ministry and service to the King. Last year I did the same thing with my books, culling out over 1,000 books that I either sold, gave away or trashed as no longer important or helpful to me. It is a humbling process, one I think, that puts me in touch with the transitory nature of life and of my infinitesimal part in the march toward the final judgment.

Last night, I found a document that I used in one of my days of prayer a decade ago that I thought might be helpful to others. It has no name attached to it but I am 99.99% sure that it wasn’t me. I have taken some liberties with it. Since it has no name on it, I have liberally edited it and have put a PDF copy of it under the resource link. It is called:

Spending a Half Day with God (Link)
(it appears at the bottom of the page)

It is free to download. Simply click on the link above and print it out. I hope that many who come here to the blog will find it, use it, and find, as I did a decade ago, a helpful tool for the progress of your own walk with God. Let’s become the powerful-praying family that Jesus wants us to be. Keep praying for revival. Enjoy.
