The Law Above the Law

Sunday Afternoon Musings

I am rereading a number of James Warwick Montgomery books, currently working through The Law Above the Law. First published by Bethany Fellowship, Inc. in 1975, it is one of over 60 books in 7 different languages by the iconic man of letters. It is a priscient read. It is also sobering.

“With characteristic forthrightness, Martin Luther, who had himself studied law for a time, expressed the perennial need for sound theology and true jurisprudence:
‘I know for certain that we theologians and jurists must stay, or all the rest will go down with us. When theologians disappear, God’s Word disappears, an only heathen, aye, nothing but devils, remain. When the jurists disappear, then the law disappears, and peace goes away  with it, and nothing but robbery, murder, crime, and violence, aye, nothing but wild beasts remain.’
Two years later, in 1532, Luther was heard to remark prophetically in the same vein:
‘Where there are no people who have been made wise through the Word and the laws, there bears, lions, goats, and dogs hold public office and head the economy.’   (p. 10-11)

Increasingly, we are living in such a world.

We are becoming a lawless people and our only hope is a revival with in the church and a renewal of the rule and respect for law among the populace.  Pray with me for both.
