The Knower of Those Who are His

Who is God according to Nahum?

I love reading the Bible with questions. Today I had some time sitting in Panera by myself because an appointment had to cancel due to a family health emergency. So I pulled out my Bible and started reading Nahum with one question:

What does Nahum tell about God?

Here’s what I found:

  1. God is a jealous God. (1:2)
  2. God is an avenging God. (1:2)
  3. God is wrathful against His enemies. (1:2)
  4. God is slow to anger. (1:3)
  5. God is great in power. (1:3)
  6. God is a punisher of the guilty (1:3)
  7. God is just (1:3)
  8. God is good (1:7)
  9. God is a stronghold in the day of trouble. (1:7)
  10. God is a knower of His own (1:7)
  11. God is a restorer of Jacob (2:2)
  12. God is a promise giver (1:11, 12, 13, 14; 2:13; 3:5, 6)
  13. God is against Nineveh and its evil (2:13)

It’s just a list right? But this is just a short three chapter prophecy. Think of all the things you would learn if you asked the same question 65 more times (for the 65 other books of the Bible! And then you turned and examined all the names of God (over 1,000 different names), each of which reveals more of who God is. And then think of all the things that a deep meditation on all of these things would add to your spirit as you yielded to His Spirit to teach you.

For now, let me just point in one direction.

Yahweh is the knower of those who are His. Is that not a great comfort? God knows His people. He knows all of His people. He knows us. Each of us are intimately known by the creator of the universe. He knows my name, my needs, my anxieties, my fears, my struggles, my temptations, my insecurities,  my hopes, my dreams, all of my foibles and all of my sins. My God knows me and knowing that is a great comfort because He who sent Christ to die for me, and rise for me, and who is coming back for me will not fail to care for me and any need I have at every moment of life.

Romans 8:32

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us allthings?

There is comfort in knowing that God knows His own.
