Wednesday is for Political Controversy
I don’t want to write this post.
Despite the fact that I wrote a book with the title Picking a President or Any Other Elected Official, I’m not a really political person.
I’m a registered Independent. Have been all my life. I wish all Christians were registered Independents. I don’t think it is wise for Christians to be identified with either or any particular political party. Our ultimate allegiance should be to Jesus Christ, His will, His word, His ways. Always. We are monarchists and He is our King. Voting in America is a right of citizenship, but for the Christian, it is more of a privilege than a right. Jesus is our King. We must follow Him and trust His ways, even when, like His death, it looks foolish.
But this year’s slate of candidates seems so crazy in both the major political parties that I feel compelled to write about it. So, despite the fact that I will upset some of my friends, here are 9 biblical reasons to reject Donald Trump as a Presidential candidate. (next week: another ten related to the unsuitability of President Biden as a Presidential Candidate.
- Donald Trump Feeds Anger to Angry People. But the Scripture declares that “The anger of men does not accomplish the righteousness of God.” (James 1:20)
mmm - Donald Trump is an Admitted Liar and liars have more in common with the devil than they do with Christ. “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)m
mmmmmm - Donald Trump is a Bully. The evidence is present almost every time he opens his mouth, particularly when someone disagrees with him on anything no matter how small. “A fool always loses his temper, But a wise man holds it back.” (Proverbs 29:11). “Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” (Proverbs 29:20)m
mmmmm - Donald Trump is Untrustworthy in Almost all Decisions Related to Ethics. “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity Than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool.” (Proverbs 19:1)m hhvvvvvvhh
mm - Donald Trump’s Greatest Claim (sic) is that He Speaks Without a Censor on His Thoughts. But the Scripture says that “A fool does not delight in understanding, But only in revealing his own mind.” (Proverbs 18:2)
mmm - Donald Trump Cannot and Will Not be Coached. Wise advisors will always be ignored because he believes that he is always the smartest man in the room but the Scripture says “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.” (Proverbs 12:15) “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” (Proverbs 26:12)
mmm - Donald Trump Closest Counselors are Heretical Opponents of the Gospel. Having wicked counselors around a political leader is something the Scriptures warn us about (cf. I Kings 12).
mmm - Donald Trump is Not Above Reproach. This is a concept that we usually apply to elders and pastors in a church, but in Philippians 2:15 it is applied to the character that all Christians should be on a trajectory towards and in 1 Timothy 5:7, it is applied to the character of what Christian widows, in particular should aspire to. What warrant do we have to apply it to a political figure? Maybe we don’t but for me, I want my President to be a man (or woman) who commands respect by all even if his policies might be attacked by some. In our overly divisive time, we don’t need the distraction and scandals of lives that are not above reproach.
mmm - Donald Trump Shows No Inclination to Hate What God Hates. See Proverbs 6:16-19 for seven things that God hates. (Cf. also the sixth chapter in my book referred to above.)

And yet, he still may be the lesser of two evils!
Coming soon: 9 Biblical Reasons to Reject Joe Biden as a Candidate for President

Some answers to the critics of this post:
General statement: Some have critiqued the post for not giving evidence.
1. The anger of Jesus was not the anger of men, it was the anger of God. No
mere human’s anger is comparable.
2. President Trump’s lies are well documented. Enough said. This will also
appear on President Biden’s list.
3. Again, this is so easily observed as to not need me to give new evidence. By the way,
I think President Obama and Biden both have bully tendencies. President Obama
was more charming, President Biden is more ham-fisted, but all three of our most
recent Presidents show this tendency. Not a good trend for the nation.
4. Again, see general comments above, but this is so easily observed. President Trump
follows his gut, which is at its core, narcissistic. He makes decisions based on what
is good for Donald Trump.
5. Another Scripture: Matthew 14:18-20.
6. One of my critics (a friend) says that they have observed President Trump actually
listening to people. I have seen that on occasion myself, but I don’t trust my eyes.
Especially, when he keeps saying in multiple places, that he is smarter than
everyone else and “no one else” can save the nation. Such a grandiose ego is
untrustworthy to me. I do agree with my critic, the country does not need a
President who is run by a group of “handlers”, but that is different from being
unwilling to listen to wise counselors.
7. I’m not going to go into detail here, but a number of the people on the list that was
referred to as representative of “Christian” counselors or supporters, there were a
number of “professed” believers (some of his closest advisers) who DO NOT
understand the gospel and some who do not believe in the divinity of Christ.
In addition, some on the list, have stepped back from their support or have
nuanced their support of President Trump as “better than the alternative.”
That is not a ringing endorsement.
8. Critic misunderstood the post in both this one and #9.
