Extended Male Adolescence is a Problem
Why is it that some men act like they got dropped on their head around their 40th birthday?
Good grief, for many of them (most?) of them, they didn’t even start acting semi-manly until they turned 28! Twelve years is all they have of assuming manly responsibility for life. So, from 18-28 they are boys with men bodies, for 12 years they are men, and then they deconstruct into boys with men’s bodies again. It ridiculous! It’s stupid. And it needs a cure.
No wonder Jordan Peterson has found such a large reading audience and why so many woman are singing Peterson’s praises. He may be batty in some areas of thought but Peterson helps a large swath of his male readers to begin to grow up and its long overdue.
This extended adolescence of the American male is a problem in the church just like it is in the larger culture. The Scripture has some solutions. Some of them I have written about here. And that is one of the reasons I was thrilled when a young man approached me about a month ago at church and asked to have coffee. “I just thought for some time that I should talk to you about life and the Bible and what it means to be a man,” (or something like that), he said. So we are reading the Bible together and talking about things that matter in the life of a young husband and father, and it has been a delight to my soul and, I hope, to his.
“Lord, turn mere males into men.”
For 40 years, I have been saying that the most important prayer we could pray is “that God would turn mere boys into men of God.” It looks like some men are seeking out mentors to help them navigate their worlds. Now what we need is more men to rise up to the challenge and take them to the pages of God’s word. Pray for me as I try to do my part and pray that I lead him well.
