The Horrors of War

“This has got to be one of the most powerful photographs I have ever seen. Above is a battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in 1914, prior to being despatched to the front line; below is the same battalion upon their return in 1918 after the armistice.”

War is hell.

All wars wreak devastating havoc on the participants and on all the families of those who serve. There are no exceptions. Scars can be physical or emotional but they are indelible whether seen or invisible. I look at this picture and think of the waste of lives, the loss of ideas, the loss of dreams, children left without fathers, wives without husbands, communities without the talents and industry of the brave men who gave their lives in the “War to End All Wars”—such an absurd and egotistical thought. The idea that sinful men could “End All Wars” is comically tragic.

But there is One who will, Jesus is coming again to war against evil and injustice and put an end to the folly and violence of men.  See the books of Isaiah and Revelation.

1 I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,
who is to judge the living and the dead,
and by His appearing and His kingdom:

preach the word; be ready in season and out of season;
 correct, rebuke, and exhort, with great patience and instruction.

2 Timothy 4:1-2. (NASB95)

Jesus is coming back. Nothing is more sure than that. Not your next breath, not your retirement, not anything you are planning today. Jesus’s return for His Church is more sure than anything else. Trust Him, trust in Him today. A day is coming when He will start a war that will truly be a war to end all wars. He will conquer the hearts of men and judge the world in righteousness. No one will stand who stands with their sins unforgiven. But those who have surrendered to Him, will rise and stand with Him forever.
