Intensely Local Ministry — Starting Relationships

Thursday is for Discipleship

It was 6:11 PM and I was leaving the office for home–about a 12 minute drive. I had an appointment at 7 PM about a 10 minute drive away from home. That left 27 minutes to use productively. Things to do:

  • Water the garden
  • Prepare and eat dinner
  • Brush my teeth
  • Collect materials for 7 PM meeting.
  • Straighten up the house
  • Plug in laptop and check email
  • Check on the start of Phillies game
  • Vote for Carlos Ruiz as the all-star catcher for the National League.

What do I have time to eat?  I decide on something simple and fast. I had a good lunch. “Let’s go with Peanut Butter and Jelly and a glass of milk.” As I return the peanut butter to the cabinet I notice the neighbor behind me through the kitchen window. They are outside grilling their dinner. “Lord, I haven’t met them. …”

Idea: “Why not take those two ears of corn you bought and aren’t going to have time to eat before the weekend and give them to them.?”

Putting the sandwich down, I retrieve the corn, go out the back door only to find them gone. I’m on a mission now. Walking around the front of my neighbors house, I intend to knock on the door and offer the corn, but there they are retrieving something from the car in the driveway.

“Hello. Were you just out back grilling?”

“Yes.”

“I thought I saw you there. I’m your neighbor, Marty, I had these two ears of corn that I am not going to have time to cook and thought you might want to add them to your grill.”

“Thank you, I’m Wendy. My husband Tom will love these.”

A few more minutes of conversation and I returned to my sandwich, gathered my materials for the meeting and was on my way. It was easy to pray for the ten minute drive to the meeting for my neighbors and future opportunities to build a relationship centered on Christ.

Intensely local ministry starts that easily.

  1. I love it, Marty! That’s what it’s all about. Those “Divine Appointments”
that God places in our paths each day!
