Laying Down Our Approaches to the Conscience of Men

Tuesday is for Preaching

Alexander Whyte (That’s not Alexander Whyte in the picture. Whyte’s dates are 1836-1921) commenting on Nathan’s rapier-like preaching to David in confronting him about the wickedness of his actions with regard to Uriah and Bathsheba wrote:

“We ministers must far more study Nathan’s method; especially when we are sent to preach awakening sermons. Too much skill cannot be expended in laying down our approaches to the consciences of our people. Nathan’s sword was within an inch of David’s conscience before David knew that Nathan had a sword. One sudden thrust, and the king was at Nathan’s feet. What a rebuke to our slovenly, unskillful, blundering work!

If you are planting a church, you feel like you have little time to study how to preach, but you must make time. There are a couple of Tuesday posts over the last few years that will help you do that (See here and here and here.). The important thing is that we take advice like Whyte’s and Solomon (in Ecclesiastes 12:9-10) seriously:

9 In addition to being a wise man, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge; and he pondered, searched out and arranged many proverbs. 10 The Preacher sought to find delightful words and to write words of truth correctly.
