The Desertion of the Gospel in the Modern Church

Sunday Musings on the Gospel

Picture of house with graffitiOur time, our churches, our flocks need the strong word’s of Paul.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
—-Galatians 1:6-9 (ESV)

“Lord Jesus, make us men and women whose singular goal it is to be faithful to you and the gospel you preached, for which you died, and for which you rose victorious for the people who would place all their hope in you.”

  1. Yes, strong words but so needed, Marty. Thanks to God for your faithfulness in reminding us, and thanks be to God for Paul and inspiring him to write those words.

I spend much of my time in political activity, and also in my ministry works I often focus on eschatological matters. It is so important for me to remember the primary purpose: to preach the Gospel, to hold to the true Gospel. It is tempting at times in the political activities (especially as many other Christians fall into this trap) to claim that social justice and providing for the poor are as important as the Gospel (the suffering, death, Resurrection and Returning of our Lord Jesus Christ). Social and political justice, and providing for the poor, are very important, but they are not as vital as the Gospel.

Lord Jesus, forgive us for having strayed from the essence of Your Gospel. Help us always to remember that only You, only You have paid the full price for our sin, that only You defeated death, and that only You are able to save this fallen world. Thank You Jesus.
