Living a Focused Life

Weekend Musings

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Important things get emphasized over and over again. Growing up, I had a tendency to try to do too much. I was involved or wanted to be involved in every sport and every activity I could squeeze into a day. Have you ever heard of a kid who tried to play football and run cross-country (two fall sports) for his high school? Now you have. I did both my freshman year at Archbishop Wood High School in the Philadelphia suburbs.

I don’t remember when my Dad first said it, but he said it to me a lot. It went something like this: “Marty, you aren’t superman. You can’t do everything.” Years later another important man in my life, Bill Bauer, a great friend and mentor put it to me this way: “Marty, you can’t outwork ten men—three maybe, but not ten.” Apparently, I still had much to learn. I still do.

And that’s why my Dad and Bill repeated the counsel more than once to me. As a result, there is greater focus, purpose and direction in my life. Bill and my Dad wouldn’t let me forget what my heart still struggles to accept—life is filled with choices. Choose well and live a focused life.

In this chapter of Proverbs, the writer reminds us of first priority things with regard to life. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (9:10). He has said this before (1:7) and he will say it again (15:33). He will say it in slightly different ways (1:29; 8:13; 10:27; 14:26-27; 15:16, 33; 16:6; 19:23; 22:4; 23:17) throughout the book. He is trying to drive the point home, “Don’t forget. Wisdom belongs to God. Seek it from Him.”

Remember that this weekend and seek the face of God; seek the wisdom that comes from God in all that you do.
