The Heart-Break of Unfaithfulness

The heart of the faith is to desire to always be faithful to Christ, to never fall away, to walk closely with Christ for all our days. Unfortunately, too many who make professions of faith seem to be fruitless because of the rocks of persecution (Mark 4:17) cause them to abandon their hope in Christ. Others are fruitless because the “desire for other things” (Mark 4:19) eclipses their love for the King and they too abandon their hope in Christ.

This week I found a young artist on youtube. I was looking for a cover of one of Keith Green’s songs for use in this series. And I found a wonderful angelic voice with a simple guitar, singing the song and expressing what seemed to be a keen and passionate heart for Christ. The video was dated 2014. Between 2014 and 2017 many other videos by the same artist were uploaded, all filled with worship and praise and passion for Christ. But increasingly, other videos were uploaded, covers of pop tunes, and then fewer worship videos. A trip to their current personal website mentions nothing about Christ. In addition, there is a new and disturbing trend in some of the videos that have been uploaded. And, while I hope it isn’t true, there is ZERO evidence in the 2020 videos that the artist presently follows the One they once sung so passionately about. I don’t know. I don’t want to judge, but that scenario that I just painted is too common.

And it isn’t just celebrity singers, who first identify as Christians, gain a bit of fame and then turn away from Christ. It happens in our churches too. It is heart-breaking to see the unfaithfulness of some who once professed Christ. Watching it happen should do at least two things in us:

    1. It should engage our hearts to pray for those who have drifted away. Pray that they would return knowing that God delights to open His arms to prodigals who repent.
    2. It should serve as a warning to each of us to keep the fires of our zeal for Christ burning hot lest we too fall.

Keith Green knew this. Remarkably, he was only 7 years old in Christ when he died. Let’s follow our brother’s lead and be diligent in our study of the word of God and in praying that God would keep our passion high for the Savior.

Psalm 101:3
I will not set before my eyes

    anything that is worthless.
I hate the work of those who fall away;
it shall not cling to me.
Hebrews 10:26
For if we go on sinning deliberately
after receiving the knowledge of the truth,
there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

I Don’t Wanna to Fall Away from You

[Verse 1]
After all the things that You have shown me
I’d be a fool to let them slip away
In doing things I know I shouldn’t do
But I don’t wanna fall away from You
From You

[Verse 2]
After all I’ve only grieved Your spirit
And then I don’t know why You stay with me
But every time I fall Your love comes through
And I don’t wanna fall away from You
From You

[Chorus]
When the light is gone and good times are getting old
There’s no one left to count on and all my friends are cold
When I thirst for love, oh Lord, You’re a fountain to my soul
My soul
My soul, oh-oh Lord
My soul

[Verse 3]
In a way my life is full of burdens
But in a way You carry them from me, Jesus
‘Cause no one understands the way You do
And You know, Lord, I don’t wanna fall away from You

[Outro]
Well, every day I pray to start anew
‘Cause You know, Lord, I don’t wanna fall away from You
No Lord, I don’t wanna fall away from You
No Lord, I don’t wanna fall away from You
From You, Lord
