Awesome is God in His sanctuary
The God of Israel—
He is the one who gives power and strength to His people.
Blessed be God.
This was the benediction to today’s service and, in the sovereignty of God, the perfect ending to music, message and testimony. Neither I, nor anyone else designing the service knew what its impact would be on the congregation. We didn’t know that 10 year old boys would be moved by the message, or that a mother grieving the murder of a daughter heard just what she needed to know that God was holding her hand and would not forsake her.
But God knows these things. He knows the needs of His people. He counsels us with his eye upon us (Psalm 32:8). He sympathizes with our weakness (Hebrews 4:15). He knows that we “are but dust” (Psalm 103:12).
I remember a day after a service, I approached a couple who was weaping together. I asked them what was wrong.
“How did you know? How did you know that this was exactly what we needed to hear this morning?” And then they proceeded to tell me what they had been struggling with and how the text, the message, the service was tailor made to strengthen their wavering and suffering hearts in the midst of family crisis. My response?
“I didn’t know. I’m not that smart. This text was selected for this Sunday, 6 months ago when I was on a prayer retreat to plan the preaching calendar. Your God knew what you would need on this Sunday and He led me and the calendar to meet the need you had this morning. He is the One to marvel at not me”
And so it always is.
Our God is awesome in His sanctuary and He gives power and strength to His people.
