I don’t remember how long I had been up. But it is not normal for me to be awake early. If I am reading my Bible before 7:30 in the morning it is because God or caffeine or anxiety is robbing me of sleep. But these are always great times in the word. So much so that when I am driven from my bed to the silence of the living room, I have come to anticipate a rich time with God.
So many things become clear in the silence of an early morning alone with God. Undistracted, unencumbered by a day’s activities, God speaks through his word and invites us into wisdom and warns us that the wicked are not blessed.
So three days after Christmas in 2005, I found myself kicking off my “Read through the Bible” program for the new year a little bit early with Psalm 1.
Read Psalm 1:1-6
Wisdom Flees from Neglect
Wisdom flees from neglect
Like an unappreciated lover
She runs to others who lust for her
And opens her treasure
To one who delights in her pursuit.
Her untended garden
Is all the reproach she needs
To fill the one she has left
With only memories and regret
The Lord of heaven designed it so.
